This website, kurocho.com (the "Site"), is operated by Thomas Bernard Calvet, trading as Kurocho ("we", "us", "our"), a sole trader registered in France under SIREN 923 373 104. We offer this Site, including all information, tools and services available from it, conditioned on your acceptance of the terms, conditions and policies set out here. By browsing the Site or buying from us you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service, together with the policies referred to in them: our Shipping Policy, our Return & Refund Policy and our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree to them, please do not use the Site. Our store is hosted on Shopify, which provides the ecommerce platform that allows us to sell to you.
By agreeing to these Terms you confirm that you are at least 18 years old. This is not a formality: everything we sell is a bladed article, and selling one to a person under 18 is a criminal offence in the United Kingdom. You may not use our products for any unlawful purpose, nor use the Site in a way that breaches any law that applies to you, including copyright law. You must not transmit any malware or destructive code. Any breach of these Terms will end your right to use the Site immediately.
We may refuse service to anyone, at any time. In particular we will refuse or cancel any order where we are not satisfied that the buyer is aged 18 or over, or where the delivery address or order pattern suggests the goods are intended for an unlawful purpose. We will co-operate fully with law enforcement. You understand that your content, excluding payment card details, may travel unencrypted across networks; card details are always encrypted in transit. You agree not to copy, resell or exploit any part of the Site without our written permission.
We sell Japanese-style kitchen knives — gyuto, santoku, nakiri, kiritsuke, petty, boning, bread, paring and cleavers — together with knife sets, wooden scabbards, magnetic racks and blocks, and sharpening steels. We describe each knife as accurately as we can, including its steel, hardness, blade length, edge angle and handle material, and including its limits.
Our blades are hand-finished and many of our handles are turned from stabilised wood, abalone or hand-poured resin. Damascus patterning, hammered finishes, resin and wood grain differ from piece to piece, and the knife you receive will not be an exact match for the photograph. We have made every effort to show colours and finishes faithfully, but we cannot guarantee that your screen displays them accurately. These variations are a property of the material, not a fault, and blade dimensions are nominal and subject to small manufacturing tolerances.
We do not publish edge-retention or cutting-force test figures, because how long an edge lasts depends on your board, what you cut, how you wash the knife and how you store it. Our product pages give you the things that do not change instead: the steel, the handle material and, where listed, the blade length, the hardness in HRC and the edge angle per side.
Offers are valid while stocks last. Descriptions and prices may change at any time. We may limit the quantity of any product offered, and discontinue a product at any time.
All prices are shown in pounds sterling (GBP) and include all taxes applicable at checkout. The price that applies to your order is the one displayed at checkout when you buy. For a UK order the price at checkout is the final price: there is nothing further to pay on delivery, no import VAT and no customs charge.
Payment is taken securely at the time of order through our payment providers; we never see or store your full card number. Prices may change at any time, but a change will not affect an order we have already accepted.
Your order is an offer to buy. A contract is formed only when we send you a dispatch confirmation. Please give current, complete and accurate billing and delivery information, and keep it up to date so that we can fulfil your order and contact you. We may decline or cancel an order before dispatch — for example if an item is out of stock, if a price was listed in error, if the order appears to come from a dealer or reseller, if we suspect fraud, or if we cannot satisfy the age requirement above. If we cancel an order after payment, we refund you in full without delay.
Delivery areas, costs, processing and transit times are set out in our Shipping Policy, which forms part of these Terms. UK delivery is free on every order; we dispatch within 1–2 working days and delivery then takes 5 to 7 working days (6 to 9 working days in total).
Every order containing a bladed article is dispatched on an age-verified, signature-on-delivery service. The parcel is marked as containing a bladed article, the carrier asks for photographic ID at the door, and the parcel is handed only to a person aged 18 or over. It cannot be left in a safe place, with a neighbour or in a parcel locker, and we cannot waive this at your request. If delivery fails because no one aged 18 or over was available, the parcel is returned to us and we refund the order less the outbound and return carriage actually incurred.
Risk in the goods passes to you when you, or someone you have nominated, takes physical possession of them.
Returns are governed by our Return & Refund Policy, which forms part of these Terms. It gives you 30 days from delivery to return an unused knife. That policy sits alongside, and does not replace, your statutory right to cancel within 14 days under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, and your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 to goods that are of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. Nothing in these Terms limits those rights.
Owning and using a kitchen knife at home is perfectly lawful. What you do with it outside your home is governed by rules, and following them is your responsibility as the owner:
Age. It is a criminal offence to sell a knife to a person under 18, and it is an offence for a person under 18 to buy one. We do not sell to under-18s, and we will cancel any order we believe has been placed by one.
Delivery. A knife bought online must be handed to a person aged 18 or over, with an identity check. That is why we cannot leave your parcel in a safe place or with a neighbour.
Carrying in public. It is an offence to have a knife with you in a public place without good reason or lawful authority. Taking your knife to work in a kitchen, to a class, or home from the shop in its packaging is a good reason; carrying it otherwise is not. Transport it sheathed, wrapped, in a roll or in its box, in a bag — never loose, and never on your person.
Gifts. You may buy a knife as a gift for an adult. You may not buy one on behalf of someone under 18.
Use. Our knives are ground fine for clean cutting. They are not for bone, frozen food, glass or stone boards, or anything other than preparing food. Keep them out of reach of children, hand wash them, dry them immediately, and store them in their scabbard, on a magnetic rack or in a block — not loose in a drawer.
Outside the UK. You are responsible for complying with the law where you live, including any local restriction on possession, carriage or import of bladed articles.
We are not responsible for loss, damage, injury or legal consequences arising from carrying a knife in public without good reason, giving a knife to a person under 18, or using a product for anything other than its intended purpose.
This section is general information about how our products are regulated, not legal advice.
Our knives are hand wash only. Dishwashers, soaking, and storing a blade wet will damage the edge, the finish and the handle, and such damage is not a manufacturing fault. Our knives are not designed to cut bone or frozen food. Keep them out of reach of children.
Occasionally the Site may contain typographical errors, inaccuracies or omissions relating to descriptions, prices, promotions, delivery charges, transit times or availability. We may correct errors and update or cancel orders affected by them, including after an order has been submitted, and we will tell you if we do. We are under no obligation to update information on the Site except as the law requires.
The Site may include material from third parties or links to third-party sites that are not connected with us. We do not review or endorse their content and we are not liable for it. Please read their own terms and privacy policies before dealing with them.
If you send us reviews, photographs of your knives, ideas or other material, you agree that we may use, edit, copy, publish and distribute it without restriction or payment. We are not obliged to keep it confidential or to respond. Your submissions must not infringe anyone's rights or contain unlawful, defamatory or obscene material, and you are responsible for their accuracy.
The content of this Site — texts, photographs, graphics, logos and the Kurocho name — belongs to us or our licensors and is protected by intellectual property law. It may not be reproduced, distributed or exploited, in whole or in part, without our prior written permission.
To the extent the law permits, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of the Site or of a product, including lost profit or lost data, and our total liability for any claim will not exceed the amount you paid for the product concerned. We are not liable for injury or damage resulting from misuse of a knife, use contrary to our care instructions, or use by a person who is not competent to handle a sharp blade. Nothing in this clause excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded, and nothing in it affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
If any provision of these Terms is unlawful or unenforceable, it is severed and the remaining provisions continue to apply. Our failure to enforce a right is not a waiver of it. These Terms and the policies referred to in them are the whole agreement between us about your use of the Site.
We are not liable for delay or failure to perform caused by events beyond our reasonable control, including extreme weather, natural disaster, war, industrial action, government action, epidemic, or failure of a carrier, supplier or telecommunications network.
These Terms are governed by English law, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, you keep the benefit of any mandatory consumer protection in your country of residence.
Before making any claim, please contact us at contact@kurocho.com so we can try to settle the matter with you directly. We answer within 24 hours and most problems are resolved that way.
You can always read the current version of these Terms on this page. We may update or replace any part of them by posting a new version on the Site. The version published on this page at the time you order is the version that applies to your order.
